City economy should be around 35 MPG. A combined 111-horsepower is sent through a continuously variable transmission, and 127 pounds-feet of torque is available between 1,000-3,000 rpm.

Acura expects a quarter of ILX sales to be for the hybrid, and aims to keep the price tag "well below" $30,000 when it hits the roads in the next few months.

The hybrid will be joined by a 2.0-liter model with an automatic transmission, and a sportier, 201-horsepower 2.4-liter, available with a manual gearbox. All models will be assembled at Honda's Greensburg plant in Indiana, and all feature keyless entry, Pandora internet radio and a host of safety features.

Read More: http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1072700_2013-acura-ilx-hybrid-expected-to-reach-38-mpg-highway

2013 Acura ILX Sedan Spy Photos, Including Interior

Acura is less than two weeks away from revealing its production-ready ILX compact sedan at the Chicago auto show, but our spy shooters spotted a test vehicle and managed to take a clear picture of the car’s dash. The ILX concept, which appeared in January in Detroit, was an exterior buck with no interior.

Surprise, surprise: The interior is pretty standard Acura stuff. The button-smothered center stack borrows a few pieces from the Honda Civic—it shares a basic platform with the ILX—including the climate-control knobs at the bottom. It looks like Acura won’t use this car as an opportunity to stray from its current infotainment setup, which involves a giant control knob protruding from the middle of the dashboard. We’re not fans of the setup as a whole, but we’ve at least been promised that the software will receive a significant upgrade. Since the ILX is targeted at younger shoppers (think people under 40), there’s a lot at stake in having quick, modern, and seamless phone integration and navigation.

The pictures don’t convey material or assembly quality, but we hope significant attention has been given to the ILX’s cabin: The cheap-feeling interior in the ILX’s Civic sibling is a big disappointment. Honda heard us—and the rest of the car-buying public—and is fast-tracking updates said to enrich the experience. That hopefully bodes well for the ILX’s trappings.

Acura previously announced that the ILX would get three powertrain configurations. A 2.0-liter four making 150 to 160 hp will be paired exclusively with an automatic transmission. The enthusiast’s choice will be the 200-ish-hp, 2.4-liter four sold only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Finally, an ILX hybrid will be offered and borrow its 1.5-liter four from the Civic hybrid; the electric motor probably will be shared with the Honda, too. Exact specs for the three powerplants should accompany the car’s official debut.

As for the ILX’s sheetmetal, it should be nearly identical to that of the Detroit concept. A few of the smallest details—wheels, the shape of the side mirrors—could change, but in essence, what we saw is what we’ll get. It looks decent in person, and the Civic roots aren’t obvious. While we and the rest of the enthusiast community want a new Integra with aggressive styling, we are a minority of the car-buying public. This car should be attractive to the Millennial yuppies that Acura’s trying to court.
Check back on February 8 and 9 for our live coverage of the ILX and the rest of the debuts from the Chicago show floor.

Read More: http://blog.caranddriver.com/2013-acura-ilx-sedan-spy-photos-including-interior/

2012 Detroit auto show video: 2013 Acura RDX

The first-generation RDX small upscale SUV was something of a miss for Acura. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine was unrefined. Its overall fuel economy of 18 mpg in our tests fell below that of many rivals’ V6 engines. Handling was agile, but the ride was very stiff and the cabin was narrow. Add in somewhat awkward styling and the RDX was a modest seller that was completely overshadowed by its three-row MDX big brother. Acura seeks to remedy these problems with the redesigned RDX unveiled at the Detroit auto show.

While other SUV manufacturers are moving to small-displacement turbocharged four-cylinders, Acura is retreating to a 3.5-liter V6. Despite the large-displacement engine and its 273 horsepower, Acura is claiming best-in-class fuel economy. Rather than the complicated SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system of the previous RDX, the new RDX has a simpler and lighter system similar to that in the Honda CR-V, upon which it is based.

The styling is smoothed out and, in true Acura fashion, is conservative and forgettable. It looks like a shrunken Acura MDX, or a Chevrolet Equinox, or any one of the seemingly dozens of small SUVs on the market. Our quick sit in the show car’s interior revealed an accommodating rear seat and the typical Acura button-laden dashboard.

It’s too bad that the RDX is arriving too late to be included in the March issue of Consumer Reports, which includes tests of other upscale small SUVs: the BMW X3, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

We’ll see how the RDX stacks up to those rivals and others in this growing category when we buy one to test in early summer. Until then, take a look our a preview video below.

Read More: http://news.consumerreports.org/cars/2012/01/2012-detroit-auto-show-video-2013-acura-rdx.html

Acura Earns Three IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK Ratings

Best selling Acura TSX, TL and MDX receive IIHS accolades

Acura today announced that three of its best selling models received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) under its more-stringent testing guidelines implemented last year.

The Acura TSX sedan and wagon, TL and MDX earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all four ratings, including the more rigorous roof-strength test. Although we judged the all-new model, launched in 2009, as cold and uninspiring, the company spent the last three years continually refining, reworking, and improving its mid-size offering. Suspension revisions, which arrived in 2010, improved handling, and an available six-speed manual transmission endeared itself to buyers looking for a premium performance machine. Arguably, the 2012 model -- which actually arrived at dealerships in early 2011 -- is the best TL yet, thanks to another round of polishing. Perhaps the best example is the exterior -- the car's ungainly, beaklike nose has been abolished, replaced by a more conservative grille and new, proportional front and rear bumper fascias. The makeover isn't quite as extensive inside, but the optional technology package does toss in luscious Milano leather seating surfaces. Beneath the skin, a six-speed automatic transmission improves fuel economy, and it's also a little smoother shifting than the outgoing five-speed unit. Front-wheel-drive TLs continue to use a 280-hp, 3.5-liter V-6; stepping up to the all-wheel-drive model forces an upgrade to a potent 305-hp, 3.7-liter six-cylinder. Enthusiasts will prefer the latter, but not simply for the power: the torque-vectoring driveline increases grip in cornering. Better yet, it's also the only way to opt for that crisp, slick-shifting six-speed manual.

Drive: Front-wheel, 4-wheel
Trim Levels: RL, RL SH-AWD
Body style: Sedan, 5-passenger
Engines: 3.5L V-6, 280 hp, 254 lb-ft
3.7L V-6, 300 hp, 271 lb-ft
Transmissions: 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic
Passenger volume: 98.2 cu ft
Cargo space: 13.1 cu ft

A face-lift means that the controversial beaklike grille has been banished and blesses the TL with balanced front and rear fascia designs. A six-speed automatic transmission replaces the aging five-speed box, which helps improve fuel economy, especially on the highway.

Dual-stage front, side, and side curtain air bags, ABS, and traction and stability control are standard equipment. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are included with the technology package, while blind-spot detection, radar-based cruise control, and a collision-mitigating automatic braking system are included in the advance package.

All: 17-20 mpg city/25-29 mpg highway

Attractive front fascia

6-speed automatic improves fuel economy

Read more: http://www.automobilemag.com/capsule_review/acura/tl/2012/capsule_review_2012_acura_tl/viewall.html#ixzz1ckeEl0bR

2012 Acura MDX

The MDX is nearing its sixth birthday, yet it remains Acura's best-selling SUV and is one of the company's most popular models altogether. What's the secret to its success? Packing a little bit of everything into a single package certainly doesn't hurt. There are plenty of three-row, seven-seat SUVs on the market, but few handle and perform quite as well as the MDX. It's not easy to make a 4500-pound machine handle like a smaller sedan, but Acura employs some technological magic to make it possible.

The company's ubiquitous torque-shifting SH-AWD system certainly aids in cornering, but the available Integrated Dynamic System (IDS), which allows the driver to choose between two damper-stiffness settings, helps iron out body roll on twisty roads. The 3.7-liter V-6 provides sufficient power, while the smooth six-speed automatic transmission helps squeak out a few extra miles per gallon over the previous five-speed automatic. Acura's ZDX may feel (and look) slightly sportier, but the MDX has a tremendous advantage over its razor-edge sibling. With room for seven, a flexible cargo area, the ability to tow 5000 pounds, and the agility of a vehicle half its size, it's a more well-rounded option.

Read more: http://www.automobilemag.com/capsule_review/acura/mdx/2012/capsule-review-2012-acura-mdx/viewall.html#ixzz1c5wX4rC4

2012 Acura RL - Body

BODY DESIGN & STRUCTURE

The 2012 Acura RL incorporates exterior bodywork that generates a crisp, yet muscular, luxury performance sedan. The RL combines its dynamic exterior and interior design with advanced body and chassis engineering. The result is distinctive and appealing styling, together with excellent maneuverability on the road. To ensure that the RL has exceptional dynamic capabilities and driving quality, it is outfitted with a lightweight and highly rigid body structure that makes extensive use of both high-tensile steel and aluminum components, and it features 4-wheel independent suspension.

DESIGN CONCEPT

Acura designers wanted to create a taut and athletic shape that conveyed the performance capabilities of the RL without sacrificing comfort and capability.

To create an exhilarating, athletic sedan, the designers targeted superior dynamic performance, superb maneuverability, distinctively appealing styling, and a high level of active safety. The result is a top-flight luxury performance sedan able to compete with the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class and others.

Design Image

Acura designers applied a "Keen Edge Dynamic" look to bring character and athleticism to the RL. To help craft the design image, styling cues include the following:

Aerodynamic design with low drag and improved high-speed stability

Acura's signature front grille that is in design concert with the Keen Edge Dynamic design grille for all new Acura vehicles

A front hood constructed of lightweight aluminum and designed for increased forward visibility and reduced aerodynamic drag

A trunk lid that reduces rearend lift at high speed and provides added visual character

Aggressively styled front and rear bumpers

Lower rocker panel side moldings with inset chrome trim accents

Flush-mount side glass for reduced wind noise

Aggressively styled headlights that incorporate Active Front Lighting System (AFS)

Aggressively styled rear taillights

Reverse gear back-up lights integrated into the rear trunk lid for improved visibility

Hexagonal-shaped, polished chrome dual exhaust tips

Aero Sculpture
The specific aerodynamic properties of the RL complement the styling, safety, dynamic performance, stability, human factors and other considerations. To achieve this high-performance exterior, the RL designers created a strong wedge shape that begins its "momentum" with the hood, continues it with a forward-mounted acoustic glass windshield, and finishes with a short rear overhang. The aerodynamic cabin has flush side glass for reduced drag and less wind.

The packaging goal for the RL was to create a taught body with short overhangs while simultaneously providing wide interior dimensions for enhanced comfort and convenience. Controlling the weight of the RL is important for maximum acceleration, road holding and braking performance -- thus, lightweight materials and weight-saving design are key.

Read More: http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=6321-en

2012 Acura TSX - Introduction

The TSX has long been one of Acura's most popular models. As an all-new, clean sheet design for 2009, the automotive media was immediately impressed and TSX sales were strong. Thanks to a great mix of styling, sporty performance, luxury appointments, good fuel efficiency and outstanding value, the TSX has remained the volume leader within its segment according to Global Insight.

Rather than resting on its laurels, for 2011 Acura debuted an all-new TSX variant— the TSX Sport Wagon. With crisp styling and added utility, the TSX Sport Wagon was a smart alternative for those considering a compact SUV. Besides offering better fuel economy, the TSX Sport Wagon provides cargo area comparable to that of many CUVs. Plus, the TSX Sport Wagon offers an available power actuated tailgate, a multi-configurable rear cargo area (with numerous hidden storage areas) and a low lift-over height allowing for easy loading. In today's tough economic environment, the time is perfect to offer a smarter choice for buyers— one without sacrifice or that is a compromise for the needs of today's savvy buyer.

Once again, Acura has not left well-enough alone as for 2012 is yet another new TSX variant— the TSX Special Edition. Designed to evoke the fun-to-drive 4-cylinder Acuras of the past, the TSX Special Edition will add even more sportiness to the TSX lineup thanks to numerous exterior and interior upgrades for Acura's entry-level sedan.

The 2012 TSX Special Edition package consists of numerous upgrades to the exterior including a more aggressive front spoiler, a new rear bumper fascia, unique side sills and an exclusive "Special Edition" badge on the trunklid. In addition, the TSX's 17x7.5-inch, 5-spoke aluminum wheels feature a polished finish with dark grey background, unique to the Special Edition model. The TSX Special Edition package makes use of Acura's acclaimed K24 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and will be available with either the close-ratio 6-speed manual or Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmissions.

Inside, the TSX Special Edition makes use of sport-minded appointments including exclusive seating surfaces with perforated black Lux Suede® inserts with red backing. Unique red stitching (used for the seats, steering wheel and the shift knob) combines with red lighting for the instrument cluster gauges, overhead lighting and footwell lighting. Adding more appeal to the driver's footwell are aluminum pedal covers with a race-inspired look. Rounding out the Special Edition's interior upgrades is the use of bright silver plating for the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters along with black headliner material (standard TSX have grey headliner material).

Other TSX updates for 2012 include even more rear cargo space for the Sport Wagon model. In all, 11 of 28 competing classes at the Runoffs featured members of the Honda Racing Line, Honda Performance Development's grassroots motorsports support program.

Greg Gauper highlighted a weekend of outstanding performances from a combined 36 Honda and Acura drivers at the Runoffs, winning the H-Production race on a damp track in his Honda Civic. Rain affected nearly all of Sunday's eight races, and Gauper had established a strong wet-weather setup earlier in the week. He used it to good advantage in the race, moving up from his second-row grid position to take the lead on the third lap and edge out a 3-second margin of victory at the end of the 13-lap (52-mile) event.

"It still hasn't sunk in," Gauper said at the finish. "I really expected I'd be battling for possibly third spot. I didn't think the rain was going to be as much of an advantage [for us]. My stomach was just butterflies [before the start] … ‘am I making the right [tire] choice?' We decided to go out with intermediates on the front and slicks on the back. It was a handful, but it worked out well for me."
In addition to Gauper's victory, five other Honda and Acura drivers recorded top-three finishes at the Runoffs, highlighted by a thrilling, come-from-behind second-place run for 2010 Touring 3 National Champion Chad Gilsinger in his Acura TL-SH AWD,

Starting 15th in a large, 26-car Touring 2 field, Gilsinger's all-wheel-drive package came to the fore during his 10-lap, rain-shortened race. Despite starting on slick BF Goodrich tires, Gilsinger was able to find traction on a damp-but-drying track in the early laps, then really began to move up in the order when rain returned with a vengeance on Lap Seven. With the rain increasing in severity, Gilsinger caught and passed everyone save winner Marty Grand, who started on full rain tires in his four-wheel-drive Mitsubishi.

"We started the race on slicks, and knowing we had all-wheel-drive gave me a little bit more comfort," Gilsinger said. "At the beginning, it was wet enough that I was able to take advantage. Then, it started to dry out and our power-to-weight was not quite there, so we started to move a little backwards. But then, it downpoured and there were puddles everywhere, and that's when it got bad for everyone. You have to work really hard to keep it on the track in those conditions. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see the checkered flag!"

In Touring 3, Chris Puskar led the Honda S2000 effort on a damp-but-drying track with a second-place finish, surviving a quick spin while trying to catch and pass eventual winner Kevin Fandozzi. In addition to scoring his best Runoffs result, Puskar also set fastest race lap and won the "Hard Charger" award for gaining the most positions in the race after starting 11th.

Read More: http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=6248-en

Replacing the safety spare tire with a new tire repair kit allows the under-floor storage area to be significantly enlarged. As a result, the total rear cargo area increases to 66.2 cubic feet— a gain of 5.7 cubic feet. Consequently, the TSX Sport Wagon is now the leader in rear cargo area as compared to the competitors in its class.

The 2012 TSX remains fun to drive thanks to two powerful engine choices; a spirited 2.4L inline four cylinder (available on TSX Sedan, Sport Wagon and Special Edition) and a torquey 3.5L V-6 (available on TSX Sedan). Both engines recently received numerous improvements to reduce internal operating friction which help improve fuel economy. As a result, the friction reduction measures are a significant element to improve fuel economy as (for example) there are improvements in city, highway and combined fuel economy for both the 2.4L I-4 and the 3.5L V-6 versus the earlier designs of the TSX engines.

Read More: http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=6213-en

25th Anniversary Acura Enthusiast Event

We recently invited some of the most active Acura enthusiasts to spend the day with us at our headquarters in Torrance, California. So, we ordered one for a Four Seasons test.

The ZDX does follow convention (Acura convention, at least) in its model hierarchy. There are three trim levels: base, Technology, and Advance. Prices range from the mid-$40,000s to the mid-$50,000s, and they're about $4000 higher than those of an equivalent MDX, which is similar in size but is more spacious and has more traditional styling.

The ZDX Advance is Acura's most expensive offering. As you'd expect, it's fully loaded, with a glass roof, heated and cooled front seats, navigation with traffic and weather updates, a rearview camera, a premium sound system, adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, a blind-spot warning system, the Integrated Dynamic System (which varies suspension firmness and power-steering assist), and Milano leather. That's the version we chose, as the ZDX is supposed to be all about personal indulgence.

The ZDX interior certainly is indulgent. The suedelike headliner, loop-pile carpet, and ultrasoft, natural-grain leather are quite rich-looking. Unfortunately, the leather did not prove to be very durable. It began to show wear, both on the driver's seat and on the back seats, before the odometer reached 20,000 miles. Apparently, there's a reason most manufacturers don't use such soft hides.

The ZDX's materials and design may be unusual, but its interior is highly usable. "This might be the most functional center stack/console ever," said associate web editor Donny Nordlicht. "There are compartments in all the right places for cups and keys, a handy BlackBerry slot by the driver's right knee, and a power outlet exactly where it needs to be."

The navigation system, Bluetooth, and stereo also came in for praise. "The navigation interface looks rather tired compared with some of today's sharpest displays," said senior web editor Phil Floraday, "but the system actually chooses the best routes and can take traffic into account, which makes up for the dated graphics." We also loved the joystick operation (rather than a touch screen) and the high level of detail showing the names of smaller streets. The Bluetooth also worked very well, and the Panasonic ELS audio system was "nothing short of superb" -- although you need to use DVD audio discs to get the full benefit.

We enjoyed the stereo and even the navigation system, but the most vital electronics were probably the backup camera and the blind-spot warning system. Said editor-in-chief Jean Jennings: "As much as I hated the annoying warning beep every time I signaled to change lanes when a car was approaching in my blind spot (which is the entire rear of the car), I didn't turn off the system because I could not see anything behind me, due to the swooping C-pillars, the low roof, and the big headrests." Given the mail-slot rear window, the backup camera -- which, helpfully, offers a choice of top-down and wide views as well as the conventional straight-back perspective -- is another essential. Even when you're looking straight ahead, the view out of the ZDX is not great because of its shallow windshield and low-mounted rearview mirror.

Read More: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/12_month_car_reviews/1109_2010_acura_zdx_four_seasons_wrap_up/index.html

Acura ZDX

2012 Audi Q3 - First Drive Review

Not content with the success of the Q5, Audi is launching an even smaller crossover to compete with the BMW X1 and Acura RDX. The Q3’s underpinnings started with the VW Tiguan platform, but the architecture was significantly altered to be considered worthy of Audi’s four interconnected rings. “We have taken the most suitable parts from the components bin, and its architecture is basically a mix of the PQ46 [Passat, CC] and PQ35 [Tiguan, Mark VI Golf] platforms,” says development coordinator Thomas Soppa.

The electronics systems are largely taken from the A3 Sportback, and the front subframe and suspension are taken from the TT. Audi worked hard on reducing weight. The engineers used tailored blanks and high-strength steel for the passenger cell, and the hood and the hatch are aluminum. As a result, Audi’s version is said to be more than 130 pounds lighter than its VW sister model.

Engine choices for the Q3 are, for the most part, four-cylinders. The entry-level engine, a 140-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel, is only available with front-drive, but at 236 lb-ft, it is so torquey that extra wear on the tires might offset any savings in the showroom or at the pump. With the 177-hp version of the turbo-diesel, the fully variable, third-generation Haldex all-wheel-drive system is obligatory. The same goes for the two 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engines, which make 170 and 211 hp. The less powerful diesel and gasoline mills come standard with the MQ350 six-speed manual, whereas the burlier engines come with the DQ500 seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A hybrid model is possible but isn’t in the works. Audi isn’t currently planning to bring the Q3 to the hybrid-friendly U.S.—although there is still a chance—and European buyers are content with their diesels.

Read More: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/11q2/2012_audi_q3-first_drive_review

REVIEWS: 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD Tech

Back in my young and foolish days, I considered swapping a manual transmission into my first car, a front-wheel-drive Pontiac Grand Prix. Thankfully, I didn't go through with it (the cost of parts alone would have exceeded the car's value), but I remain a huge believer in the transformative power of a stick shift.

That faith is vindicated with the Acura TL. I've driven several versions of the car with the old five-speed automatic (Acura has since gone to a six-speed auto) and found it a perfectly competent yet completely unremarkable sports sedan -- good at everything, great at nothing. The six-speed manual changes that. Thanks to one of Honda's legendary gearboxes, the Acura TL can claim a superlative: Best Shifting Sport Sedan. It's better than the slightly rubbery gear change in the BMW 3-series and better than the somewhat notchy action in the Audi A4/S4. Whereas I couldn't really remember anything defining about the slushbox TL, I will be blathering for weeks about the precise perfection that is the TL's manual transmission.

Just as important, the three-pedal setup acts as a magic ingredient, enhancing the flavor of several other already good parts. The 3.7-liter V-6, freed of the muffling effect of a torque converter and bolted to the front subframe via stiffer bushings, now growls angrily as it charges through the gears, chirping the tires on 1-2 upshifts. The "Super Handling" all-wheel drive system now seems more aggressive, mostly because the TL is now always in the right gear (or at least what I believe to be the right gear) when the I pin the throttle to shoot out of corners. The only fly in the ointment is steering that's a bit too light and numb, though it firms up reassuringly at higher speeds.

The new front fascia -- the biggest change for this model year -- has less of a transformative effect but is still a definite improvement. In the design studio that big ol' silver beak probably seemed like the perfect way to announce Acura's bold new styling language. In the real world, it became the only thing people noticed when the car pulled up. The toned-down grille lets the rest of the exterior design take the spotlight. Lo and behold, it's not a bad design at all -- still not on par with style leaders like the Cadillac CTS and Audi A4 but handsome nonetheless.
<div class="std clr1 no_b body_link This second generation is getting on in years but has aged well. The overall demeanor of the vehicle is very satisfying. It's luxurious and well-built and comfortable but not ostentatious. It is only as big as it needs to be, as compared with, say, the Audi Q7 that we had in the office at the same time, which carries a ridiculous amount of mass.

The MDX's center stack is a little confusing on first use, with a bewildering array of buttons and switches and screens and letterings, but I suppose that most owners quickly learn how to use everything.

Joe DeMatio, Deputy Editor

The MDX is the best-selling Acura and is probably the best Acura period. Unlike some of the brand's other offerings, it doesn't side-step competitors with a low price: It's an expensive full-size crossover that feels and drives every bit like an expensive full-size crossover. It also wears the most natural and good-looking execution of Acura's angular design language - it's not an afterthought nor is it overdone. The interior is more conservative, but is similarly attractive and built to the same high standard as the cabin of the RL sedan we had in a few weeks ago.

I did not get to drive the MDX as much as I'd like, as we were in the throes of sending our magazine out to the printer (how old fashioned!), but found the ride sufficiently comfortable for my tired commute home.

David Zenlea, Assistant Editor

The Acura MDX is an excellent example of the sporty refinement that the brand is synonymous with. The entire vehicle has a substantial, solid character that never feels heavy or cumbersome. The sporty and luxurious cabin oozes quality and I found it to be more comfortable than some of its competitors, such as the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX. In fact, on the sport vs. luxury scale the MDX is a near-perfect halfway point between these two SUVs. The Acura's steering is a weak point as it could use more feel, but it's less heavy than the X5's and better weighted than the RX's.

Read More: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/editors_notebook/1104_2011_acura_mdx_advanced_entertainment/index.html

REVIEWS: 2011 Acura RL Advance

We journalists tend to dismiss the RL based on more or less abstract standards - it's not pretty enough, not sporty enough, not premium enough. But I suspect real owners absolutely love it. And why shouldn't they? The RL is quick, comfortable, quiet, and likely more reliable than many of its sexier European competitors.

The RL's quality remains its foremost achievement. Run your fingers along the perfectly aligned exterior panels, the thick slab of wood that runs across the dashboard, and the soft-touch plastics found under the dashboard. Even in a time when most cars are built to a high standard, Acura flagship's stands a notch above.

Such careful execution is also evident in the suspension tuning. Southeast Michigan potholes couldn't disturb the RL enough to spill my coffee, and a few decent switchbacks exposed very little body roll. The steering wheel, nicely trimmed with perforated leather and wood, transmits enough feel and feedback to make the car feel smaller than it actually is, a trick Acura engineers also put to good use in the larger ZDX. The RL's 3.7-liter V-6 lacks the grunt of its German rivals, but it's hardly impotent and is amazingly refined. Someone at Infiniti needs to take this engine apart and figure out how to build a large-displacement V-6 that's this creamy. The SH-AWD system makes the most of that power, further shrinking the car's footprint as it dances through turns.

The only way the RL might frustrate an actual owner is with its telematics. I've had plenty of time to master Acura's navigation and radio controls from my time with our long-term ZDX, but I still find them harder to use and less attractive than competitors' solutions. The nav screen graphics look a few years out of date. The RL recoups a few technology points, though, when you turn up the volume on the sound system.

Read More: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/editors_notebook/1104_2011_acura_rl_advance/index.html

REVIEWS: First Drive: 2011 Acura MDX SH-AWD

As the saying goes, 47,000 customers can't be wrong. Nearly four years after Acura launched its second-generation MDX, 47,210 customers lined up in 2010 to bring home the company's midsize crossover. Not only does that make the MDX Acura's best-selling vehicle in 2010 (it beat the TL by nearly 13,000 units), but also one of the best-selling luxury crossovers currently available in North America.

That's impressive, considering the market is flooded with premium crossovers, many of which launched after the MDX's original debut. How then does the MDX manage to woo so many buyers in an extremely competitive segment? We slid behind the wheel of a 2011 model to find out for ourselves.

Sized Right

Macroscopically speaking, midsize luxury crossovers tend to fall into two different categories: smaller models, like the Lexus RX and Cadillac SRX, and larger vehicles -- the Buick Enclave, Lincoln MKT, BMW X5, and Audi Q7, for instance -- which offer three rows of seating and room for seven or eight passengers.

The MDX, which shares its platform with the Honda Pilot, slots nicely between those two extremes. At 191.6 inches long, the MDX is roughly a foot longer than the RX and SRX, yet it's almost ten inches shorter than the likes of the MKT, Q7, and Enclave. Those trim dimensions may not abide by the "bigger is better" way of thinking, but they do pay dividends when attempting to maneuver the MDX through a crowded parking lot or tuck it into your garage.

Read More: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1103_2011_acura_mdx_sh_awd_drive/index.html

2012 Acura TL - First Drive Review

We tend to like Acuras. They usually offer decent handling (the company’s torque-vectoring Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system only helps), a high level of technology, and good value relative to the German luxury brands. Since the current-generation TL was introduced in 2008, though, we’ve been unable to get over a couple of significant shortcomings: an automatic transmission that missed the six-speed boat—making do with only five forward ratios—and that awful beak. For 2012, Acura has attempted to address these complaints.

Now That We’ve Got That Out of the Way

First, the styling. That you should defend your products to the death is PR 101, but even Acura folks admit that, if there was one deal-breaker that potential customers cited when choosing other cars over Acura’s, it was the TL’s, um, controversial styling. The 2012 update should help. While the stylistic changes may not have much effect in pictures, seeing the 2011 and 2012 models side-by-side proves that the numerous small alterations did help.

Changes for 2012 start, of course, with toning down the TL’s divisive grille. Yes, the badge blade and intake aperture remain roughly the same as before, but the clunky silver surround is gone, replaced by a thin chrome frame and new body-color trim piece between grille and hood. The headlight innards are now painted black instead of silver, and the bevels in the bumpers both front and rear have been raised. The supplemental air intakes in the front fascia feature new detailing, while in back, the taillight lenses have been revised and the license-plate mount has been raised. In the process of making all these tiny tweaks, Acura trimmed an inch from the front overhang and half an inch from the rear.

Six-Speeds across the Board

While the slightly downplayed styling is a subjective fix—and it might help keep Lexus intenders in the Acura showroom for more than a cursory glance—the fitment of a six-speed automatic in place of the old five-speed yields considerable fuel-economy benefits. Both of the TL’s engines—a 3.5-liter V-6 with 280 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque for front-wheel-drive models, and a 3.7-liter V-6 with 305 hp and 273 lb-ft for all-wheel-drivers—carry over unchanged save for some friction-reducing measures in the smaller mill. But the extra cog makes it that much easier to access the sweet part of either engine’s powerband, which is from 4000 to 6000 rpm. Shifts are quick and crisp, and we love the way the transmission holds paddle-selected gears in Sport mode, refusing to upshift at redline. Shifts in drive, however, seem somewhat harsh for commuting. Acura boasts that it has programmed the throttle to blip on downshifts, but it’s pretty disappointing in actual use.

Read More: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/11q1/2012_acura_tl-first_drive_review

2012 TL & The Chicago Auto Show

See the 2012 Acura TL as it's debuted at the Chicago Auto Show.

Don’t Call It NSX: Acura Confirms Sports-Car Plan

Honda’s president recently told a Japanese business newspaper that the company continues work on a new sports car, and the project has now been confirmed to us by an American Acura executive. The company line is that this new car will not follow up the NSX, of course—Acura told us that last summer that the mid-engined car was “too high a halo“and that the next sports car wouldn’t be as ambitious or as highly priced. The vehicle that was to pick up the NSX’s torch, a V-10–powered supercar tested at the Nürburgring, was fitted for cement shoes and dumped off Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge due to the usual concerns of high cost and obscene consumption. We also know that it won’t use a V-8, since that engine program was axed some time ago, as was further development of the company’s general rear-wheel-drive platform.

Only a chemically imbalanced optimist could react to these facts without tearing up, but at the minimum, the information helps give shape to Honda’s plans. An Acura spokesperson tells us that what it terms a “sports model” will “meet the needs of the current times and customers,” and that it would be an “exciting model that also achieves outstanding environmental and safety performance.” Based on that, as well as the company’s current platforms and engines, the sports car is likely to be a front-engined, all-wheel-driver with a V-6 that could be turbocharged or possibly even hybridized. While that could have the makings of an outstanding grand tourer with true continent-spanning range, it could also turn out to be the equivalent of an Acura RL coupe with the dull charm of the Honda CR-Z. Without a rear-drive platform, it seems unlikely that we’ll see something as visceral as the S2000—never mind the NSX.

Read More: http://blog.caranddriver.com/dont-call-it-nsx-acura-confirms-sports-car-plan/

Acura TSX Sport Wagon "Transformation" Commercial

A stop-motion animated look at the new 2011 TSX Sport Wagon.

Chicago Acura TSX

Acura adds some sheet metal, spins off TSX station wagon

SAN FRANCISCO -- Wagons represent only a thin slice of the near-luxury segment in the United States, but some automakers still feel obliged to offer one. For 2011, Acura will join the fight with a wagon version of the TSX sedan.

The basics: The wagon is basically a sheet metal extension of the sedan. None of the hard points have changed from the sedan. Even the seating locations are identical. As a result, the extension goes entirely into the cargo area.

Notable features: Although the TSX gives up four inches of wheelbase to the Audi A4 Avant wagon, the Acura is four inches longer overall. That gives the TSX a slightly hobby-horse appearance compared to the wheels-in-the-corners design of its German counterpart.

Interestingly, the TSX Sport Wagon has nearly identical cargo-carrying capacity as its RDX crossover cousin, with rear seats up or down. And with seats down, the TSX's flat floor is longer than that of the RDX, so a mountain bike fits easily. There also are hidden cubbyholes for valuable items.

For a car that weighs about 130 pounds more than its sedan cousin, the TSX wagon does well at maintaining road stability -- despite the sacrifice in torsional rigidity that an open cargo area creates. Acura engineers also did a fine job isolating the road noise that often creeps into the cabin from the cargo area.

While the Germans tend to ding customers with optional-feature charges, the TSX wagon boasts standard moonroof, roof rails, high-intensity headlights, Bluetooth, satellite radio, USB jack and heated leather seats with memory.

What Acura says: "This is an alternative to SUVs, without the girth or the stigma and with all the utility," said Steve Center, American Honda Motor Co.'s chief marketing officer.

Compromises and shortcomings: While the sedan version offers a choice of a four-banger or V-6, the wagon comes only with the inline-four. There is no manual transmission offered, nor is there all-wheel drive to compete against Audi's vaunted quattro system.

Read more: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20101227/RETAIL03/312279944/1018#ixzz19QJilHJJ

Acura Parts

2011 Acura RL Sedan - Details

Honda has released details on its Acura RL, flagship of the Acura brand.

Sheetmetal-wise, the 2011 RL's new snout is less bulbous than that of its predecessor. New 18-inch alloys are perched in the wheelhouses and house special technology to quiet road noise. No other cosmetic changes have been made.

The real news lies underneath the 2011 RL's skin, with a new six-speed SportShift transmission replacing the five-speed used in for the 2010 model year. The new gearbox is a welcome addition to the RL, and helps to boost fuel efficiency from 16/22 mpg city/highway to 17/24 mpg (combined fuel economy increases a full 2 mpg from 18 to 20). The additional cog could also make hilly driving a little less frantic than in the current car.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the 2011 Acura RL, though with the new transmission we expect a minor bump over 2010 prices.

Read More: http://blogs.automotive.com/6710557/miscellaneous/2011-acura-rl-sedan-details/index.html

Acura Dealers

Acura TSX Receives Numerous Updates and All-New Sport Wagon Model for 2011

Despite the TSX being a top choice in its class, Acura has not rested on its laurels, as a host of major updates have been made for 2011. Topping the list, the TSX receives a freshened exterior look along with a wide array of new features and technology- with particular attention being paid to further improving quality and cabin quietness. In addition, significant improvements have been made to both the 2.4L I-4 and 3.5L V-6 engines that yield improved fuel efficiency and longer engine life.

While the TSX sedan receives significant updates for 2011, the big news is an all-new TSX variant- the TSX Sport Wagon. With crisp styling and added utility, the TSX Sport Wagon is a smart alternative for those considering a compact SUV. Besides offering better fuel economy, the TSX Sport Wagon provides comparable cargo area to many compact SUVs. Plus, the TSX Sport Wagon offers a multi-configurable rear cargo area (with numerous hidden storage areas), a low lift-over height allowing for easy loading and unloading, and an available power actuated tailgate.

"The all-new TSX Sport Wagon is a smart alternative for those needing added utility," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "With the Sport Wagon, the customer simultaneously enjoys the benefits of sports-sedan performance along with SUV-like cargo capacity."

Acura's philosophy of smart luxury is well evidenced by the combination of great looks, a luxury interior available with a wide variety of technology features, and excellent safety- all for an exceptional level of value. Thanks to this great mix of attributes, the TSX has the largest percentage of buyers under 30 among all luxury sedans and has remained the volume leader within its segment according to Global Insight.

Exterior

On the outside, all TSX models receive a new front fascia, revised chin spoiler, new fog light garnish assembly and an updated grille. The updated front end teams with new underbody panels to improve aerodynamics. At the rear, revised taillights and a rear license plate garnish add more visual appeal for the TSX.

With the new Sport Wagon model, sport-sedan styling and added utility are combined- a perfect mix for those who lead an active lifestyle. For such customers, the TSX Sport Wagon reflects their passion for performance and athleticism while also supporting their active social lifestyle with roomy, comfortable seating for five.

Incorporating a unique high-rigidity rear body structure with a special hoop-style cross section, the TSX Sport Wagon simultaneously provides excellent body strength.

The standard 17-inch 5-spoke aluminum wheels for the 2.4L 4-cylinder models (sedan and Sport Wagon) now incorporate a machined lip on the face of the spokes. Split 5-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels remain standard on the TSX sedan with 3.5L V-6 engine.

Interior

Inside, all 2011 TSX models receive a host of visual upgrades in the form of revised styling for the center console, darker trim pieces, brightly finished door handles, an updated parking brake handle and new garnishes for the steering wheel. In addition, contrasting-color stitching is new for the leather seats, door armrests and center console. Rear seat occupants will enjoy added comfort thanks to the addition of heating/cooling vents mounted at the rear of the center console, and the TSX's center console cargo compartment is now climate controlled.

The all-new TSX Sport Wagon features an even greater level of utility over the TSX sedan. Besides offering a generous 60.5 cu-ft of rear cargo area (with rear seats folded down), the wagon's rear opening height of approximately 28-inches allows for the stowage of bulky items such as large boxes, furniture, bicycles, four full-size golf bags and even surfboards.

In addition, the Sport wagon features four hidden compartments for out-of-sight storage. A 2.4 cu-ft storage area is cleverly located beneath a lift-up hatch within the load floor. Smaller items can be placed in a 0.2 cu-ft storage area (hidden by a removable panel) located in the side panel on the driver side, or in one of two 13-inch long storage areas near the main in-floor storage area. With a low lift-over height of about 24-inches, loading heavy items is simplified. For increased security, standard is a retractable cover that prevents rear cargo items from being seen should a passer-by look into the rear windows.

Even with the second row seat in use, there is generous cargo space available in the Sport Wagon. The rear seats have a 60/40 fold-down design, so one section can be lowered to generate more cargo room while the other section can remain in the up position to accommodate a rear seat passenger. Or, both seats can be folded down to attain the maximum cargo area replete with a load-flat floor that is nearly 70-inches long. As expected, the Sport Wagon incorporates a variety of tie-down hooks for keeping cargo items secure.

The TSX Sport Wagon's 60.5 cu-ft (rear seats folded down) of rear cargo area is more than most other wagon in the category- including the BMW 3 Series (54.7 cu-ft) and the Audi A4 (56.5 cu-ft). The TSX Sport Wagon also rivals (or beats) the cargo capacity of some compact SUVs. Thus, the Sport Wagon is a smart alternative for those who are considering the purchase of a compact SUV- but who value the better fuel economy and the performance of a sports sedan.

Acura is known for its outstanding array of user relevant technology, and the 2011 TSX further expands on this concept. New for 2011, the TSX with available Technology Package now includes an LED backlit full VGA navigation screen (that generates 400-percent higher resolution than before), improved navigation system functions (faster performance, improved search ability and expanded map coverage), Song By Voice™ (SBV) user interface, a 60-gigabyte hard disk drive (HDD), and the ability to download 15-gigabytes of personal music to the TSX's HDD. With the ability to store more than 3,500 songs*, there is no longer a need to carry around bulky CDs.

Acura has always put much emphasis on building an interior that is exceptionally quiet, and for 2011 the TSX has even greater cabin serenity thanks to items such as a new acoustic glass front windshield, even thicker side glass, increased use of sound-deadening insulation, improved floor mats and new underfloor covers.

Read More: http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=5782

Acura Dealers

2011 Acura TSX Official Photos and Info – Auto Shows

Acura’s enthusiast sedan gets a mild face lift.

The favorite Acura of enthusiasts, the TSX, gets a very minor face lift for 2011, including a few mechanical enhancements to help fuel economy plus a Sport Wagon variation that will arrive in early 2011.

A new front fascia breaks up the lower grille with a smaller, sportier mouth, while the upper grille shrinks ever so slightly; Acura says the reshaped chin spoiler and new underbody aero panels aid slipperiness. The taillamps have been reworked, and new 17-inch wheels have been fitted to the 2.4-liter four-cylinder model.

Inside, Acura has revised the center console styling by replacing a few trim pieces for bits that look darker and slightly more expensive, and also added contrasting stitching on the seats. LEDs take over some interior lighting functions, too. The optional navigation system now depends on a 60-gigabyte hard drive with the ability to accept 15 gigs of personal music and photos. Cabin noise is turned down thanks to a new acoustic-glass windshield, thicker side glass, and more underfloor sound-deadening material.

An Uptick in Economy

Engineers attacked friction in the engines and managed to eke out a 1-mpg improvement from both the 2.4-liter four and 3.5-liter V-6 in both the city and highway cycles. The five-speed automatic’s shift mapping has been updated for better economy, as well, and that transmission also gets a fluid warmer to improve cold-weather shift quality and longevity. The fuel-economy figures now look like this: 22/31 for the 2.4 automatic and 21/29 for the 2.4 with the six-speed manual, and 19/28 for the auto-only 3.5-liter.

In early 2011, the TSX Sport Wagon arrives with just one powertrain option: the 2.4-liter four and five-speed automatic, with a 30-mpg highway rating. The six-speed manual may become available later, but not at launch, says Acura. The wagon will be available with the sedan’s interior and comfort options, including the hard-drive navigation and entertainment system.

Read More: <a the second generation possibly be as satisfying as the first? When the first-generation Acura TSX (2004–2008) reached the end of its production run, we were apprehensive. Would the makeover follow the all-too-familiar malaise afflicting so many new cars—more mass, more money, less edge, less fun? The original TSX offered only one engine—a naturally aspirated, 2.4-liter four generating just 200 horsepower. We loved it. Tidy in size, agile, loaded with standard features, and thrifty at the pump, that TSX would be a decidedly tough act to follow. Though no one here was smitten with the bright new overbite on the heavily chromed front fascia, we decided to give the second-gen TSX a 40,000-mile acid test to find out.

Based on the Honda Accord sold in Europe, this TSX is a little bigger than the first (an increase with minimal payoff for rear-seat passengers) and a little heavier, too—about 130 pounds, depending on equipment. But it’s much smaller than the Accord sedan sold here, and handier as well. Acura finally gave in to market pressures and added a V-6 engine option for 2010. We’re not at all sure this is a plus, particularly in light of the V-6’s $5540 premium and automatic-only transmission. Our long-term test car arrived in the depths of winter—late January 2009—with 87 miles on the odo and Acura’s thoroughly proven 2.4-liter, DOHC 16-valve aluminum four (a modest 201 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque) under its hood, mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Read More: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/10q3/2009_acura_tsx-long-term_road_test

Acura Dealers Illinois

2011 Acura TL Available in Numerous Performance Variants

6-Speed Manual and SH-AWD® Team for Segment Leading Performance

Since inception, the Acura TL performance luxury sedan has set lofty standards for styling, performance, comfort and technology. Available for 2011 in two different models (TL and TL SH-AWD®), the fourth-generation Acura TL is the most diverse in the vehicle's history offering more performance capabilities and luxury appeal than ever before— all wrapped in evocative style.

TL customers can choose between two potent V-6 powertrains along with two interior trim levels that abound with technology. For 2011, two distinct versions of Acura's performance luxury sedan are offered: a luxurious 280 horsepower, front-wheel-drive TL and a powerful 305 hp TL SH-AWD® paired with Acura's exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system. Power continues to be delivered by a potent 2.3-liter turbocharged inline four with an output of 240 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 260 foot-pound of torque at 4,500 rpm.
